The two colossal stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III stand on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor (ancient Thebes). Depicting the pharaoh seated, they once formed the entrance to his now-destroyed mortuary temple. The statues are famous for a mysterious sonic phenomenon that emanated from the northern statue after it was damaged by an earthquake, leading the Greeks to name them after the legendary hero  Memnon , in reference to Isu  (the goddess of dawn). The sound ceased after their restoration during the Roman era, and the statues remain awe-inspiring testaments to the grandeur of Egyptian civilization.
